So basically, I was hanging out with my boyfriend who is white and his friends ( also all white). I was wearing a necklace that says “Afro Boricua”. One of my boyfriend’s friends asked me what my necklace meant and I told him it meant afro- Puerto Rican. He promptly responded, “no, you’re just black”. Its not like i’m ashamed of being black, but i was completely astonished that this kid had the never to deny my heritage. He asked me why i didn’t speak spanish if i was puerto Rican and I told him that i do speak a little Spanish but i didn’t have to prove it to him. It just kills me that people think they have to right to tell you who you are.
